History of
Prosperity School Bed and Breakfast Prosperity,
MO, once a thriving mining town, lived up to its name from 1902 until about 1917. The
population went from 1,500 in 1899 to more than 5,000 during the mining boom years. In
1907 the two-story Prosperity School was built in the heart of the Tri-state mining
district, which had churches, saloons, general stores, hotels, and now a fine, large
school of red brick and Carthage stone.
"I love the
history as my grandma taught in this school, before 1920."
Cathi
& Dane, Coon Rapids, MN 6/21-6/27/03
After student population peaked at 1200 during the mining boom, the school closed its
doors in 1962, with a final population of 32 students.
"Your
home is beautiful, the room comfortable, the bed was like sleeping
on a cloud, the food was excellent---you have made our 12th
Anniversary memorable." Charles & Maggie, Liberty, Mo. 5/28-30/05
The Prosperity School originally had four very large classrooms which took up the
entirety of the two floors, along with a wide central hallway on each floor. The second
floor classrooms, one with a stage for use as the auditorium, became the three guestrooms
and one suite. The three guest rooms are named in honor of former teachers. Downstairs,
one classroom is now the Formal Dining Room and Front Parlor, defined from each other by
the placement of the Proscenium arch that originally stood over the stage. The fourth
classroom became the spacious kitchen, and innkeeper's quarters.
"What a wonderful
place! This school terrified me when I was a kid
and I loved it. It's great to be able to stay in the 'haunted school'.
Thanks for being so helpful with the (wedding) reception."
Chris & Stacey, Brooklyn, NY
